Create A Lifestyle That Supports Your Passion
Let’s talk about passion.
Some people tell you that you need to find your passion and follow it, no matter what. Others will tell you that passion is overrated — what matters is ambition and hard work.
I believe both things are essential to building a life that feels great.
If we’re being honest, chasing your passion can feel pretty indulgent sometimes. Most of us don’t have rich parents. We have families to care for and bills to pay, and we have to find a way to do both of those things while living our lives.
But passion is all about finding a balance between doing what you love now and building the future you want for yourself later on — and we know that can be tough. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: making space for your dreams in your life really makes all the difference.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It might be possible to make money but also feel fulfilled, so you don’t get stuck in a rut of regret and resentment. If you love something, don’t just let it sit in a corner and get dusty.
Passion And Purpose Can Work Together For You
Without passion, purpose is just a word. It’s a line on a resume, an admission letter to an elite school, or a goal that you think you have to accomplish because it’s what your parents expect of you.
But when passion meets purpose, something magical happens. You see your goal as part of your overall purpose in life and not just a means to hit some arbitrary marker. Your focus shifts from the end result to the journey itself. The “how” becomes more important than the “what”.
“It’s not the destination that matters. It’s the change of scene. “— Brian Eno
Without a passion, it’s easy to fall into a rut and stay there — life becomes a series of repetitive tasks, each with its own monotonous rhythm that lulls you into settling for less than acceptable. But with passion… well, with passion, we start to believe anything is possible. Without passion, life becomes drudgery — and who wants that?
So whether you are looking for career fulfilment or personal satisfaction, there are four things to remember:
1. A Big Part of Your Life Is a Result of the Choices You Make
You can change your life if you want to — it just takes a little planning and a lot of determination. We can’t control everything but we can own certain aspects of our lives. For example, you can decide to change your job by starting to look for opportunities today and building a network that works for you; you can decide to move to another country with good planning and research. Or you can even choose to meet new inspiring people if you look in the right places…
If you don’t like where your life is at right now, if you’re feeling stuck and uninspired and like things are not going anywhere… it’s probably time to identify the things you can control, and start making better choices with those.
2. You Can Change Your Path at Any Time, for Any Reason
Don’t wait to “settle down” before starting that business, applying for that job on the other side of the world, going back to school, or changing your career path.
You have the power to make small changes in your life that can turn it around and make it feel like the right path for you again. There is no need to overhaul your entire life overnight, it doesn’t have to be something huge and dramatic — sometimes just one decision is all it takes to get you on track. You are here to enjoy life, not endure it.
“Just take any step, whether small or large. And then another and repeat day after day. It may take months, maybe years, but the path to success will become clear” -Aaron Ross
3. Life Isn’t About Seeking Approval
Some people spend their entire lives looking for approval from others, but those who find their purpose and pursue it with passion will rarely have to worry about that.
When we focus on what truly matters to us, we don’t get caught up in what others think of us — it becomes less important. And that allows us to become better versions of ourselves, to live our lives in our own ways.
4. Give Yourself to the People and Projects That Matter Most to You
If you want to live a life of no regrets, there’s one thing you need to prioritise: giving your time to the people and things that matter most.
Because unlike other things in life — money, entertainment, obligations, etc. — time is the one thing you can never get back once it’s gone.
Give your time to the people and things that will help you grow into the best version of yourself. Give your time to the people and things that will help you create meaningful memories that last a lifetime. Give your time to the people and things that will help you achieve your goals — big or small.
Remember, time is all any of us have. And we each have 24 hours every day. So ask yourself: Am I bringing both passion and purpose to my life? Am I spending my time in best way I can?
